‘Outstanding’ prep school to close

St George's Preparatory School in London Road, Boston has blamed new 'financial burdens' from government

A prep school three times in a row has announced it will close at the end of the school year due to financial pressures,

, Lincolnshire has said it was incurring “unsustainable losses”, blaming a fall in pupil numbers due to VAT on fees, an increase in employers’ National Insurance contributions, along with a rise in the National Minimum Wage.

St George’s is believed to be the 19th UK to school to announce closure or planned closure since VAT on fees came into effect on January 1.

The school was opened in 2011 with just three children, but it now has 77. praised St George’s “farm school” where children “learn to care for animals and work as a team”.

The Guide says that the prep has no private day school competition in the area, with children travelling from across the rural county to attend every day.

Founder and principal Sarah Whelan said: “This is a very sad moment for everyone connected to St George’s.

“Our dedicated staff, wonderful pupils and supportive families have made this a truly special community.

“We are heartbroken that financial realities beyond our control have forced this outcome,” she added.

Help will be given to parents in transferring their children to new schools, while staff will be offered employment support, according to the .

The announcement from Boston comes as the independent schools world awaits the outcome of a High Court challenge to the VAT on school fees policy.
